How Your Social Currency Affects Your Life

itschavah

Have you ever stopped to think about how the things you do and say on social media affect your life offline? I know it's crazy to think about but the way you present yourself on social media can have a huge impact on your social currency.

"Social whaaaaaa....????" I can already hear you saying this out loud. Let me explain.

In this blog post, we'll discuss what social currency is and how it can positively (or negatively) affect your business and/or life. We'll also offer some tips for boosting your social currency and presence.

First...dun, dun duuuuuuuh. WTF is social currency?

Social currency is the value that you have in social interactions on and offline. It's what makes you valuable to other people and it can be increased or decreased based on your actions and words. Think of it as a social credit score.

It can be argued that social currency is more important than real currency.

Think of it like this. If Beyonce were to lose all her money today - her social currency is so high/valuable that she could literally make money just by making appearances. She could get paid for walking into a building. That's social currency at its finest, don't you think?

So, how does social currency work?

Simply put, the more valuable you are to others, the more social currency you have. This value can be determined by a number of factors, including your popularity, your expertise, and your ability to make others happy. When you have a lot of social currency, people are more likely to want to interact with you. They'll also be more likely to listen to what you have to say and take your advice.

On the other hand, if you have low social currency, people may not be as interested in what you have to say. They may also be less likely to take your advice or follow your lead.

So, how can you use social currency to your advantage? There are a few key ways that you can boost your social currency and make yourself more valuable to others.

First, focus on being positive and upbeat. If you're always complaining or bringing others down, people will quickly lose interest in interacting with you. On the other hand, if you're known for being positive and helpful, people will be more likely to seek you out when they need advice or support. Although some people do use negativity/shock factor/divisiveness to entertain and incite emotion to grow their social value - we stick to the notion that you attract more with honey than vinegar.

Another great way to boost your social currency is by offering help and expertise. This is the easiest way but a lot of people overthink this. If you're an expert in a particular field, share your knowledge. And really - you don't even have to be an "expert". If you can show a unique perspective - that in itself can be all you need. For example, check out these coffee baristas that have millions in following just from showing their lives as a barista:

  • @caffeinication

  • @coffeebae97

  • @onii_tan

People will be more likely to listen to you and value your opinion if they know that you have something valuable to offer.

Finally, focus on your audience. If you can make someone's day a little brighter/easier, you'll quickly become one of their favorite people whether they know you IRL (in real life) or not. Pay attention to what your audience wants/needs/gravitates towards and lean into that and you'll be on your way.

So, there you have it. Social currency is a valuable commodity that can have a big impact on your life on and offline.
