Well lookie here y’all. Looks like the CEO of Ebay discussed the very real possibility of accepting bitcoin.

On Feb 27th, Ebay's president and CEO, Jamie Iannone, relayed the very real possibility of accepting bitcoin and also maybe including NFTs into the mix, as well, although the company attempted to integrate Bitcoin payments in 2014.

Iannone emphasized that while Ebay does not currently accept cryptocurrencies, the company plans to go "deeper on all of these things, payments, advertising, our focus categories" on March 10. We know that people have already started to trade NFTs on the platform so why not make it easier, right?

Tons of retail stores have already jumped on board and crypto is becoming increasingly harder to ignore. For years, crypto enthusiasts have argued that digital assets and the online auction platform would benefit greatly from each other. Bitcoin.com News reported on Ebay allowing NFT sales on the auction site on May 11, 2021. During an interview with The Street, Ebay CEO Jamie Iannone explained that the NFT sales simply happened.

"We're just completing our transition to manage payments where we're now managing $85 billion of volume on our platform directly," Iannone told TheStreet. "This gives us the ability to open up new forms of payment."

"We opened up Google Pay and Apple Pay. We have a partnership with Afterpay in Australia, which is a platform that appeals to Gen Z, and that is a buy now pay later platform on the marketplace," Iannone continued.

Ebay’s finally moving into the same century again with partnerships with an Australian fintech company, Afterpay, "which is a platform that appeals to Gen Z," according to Iannone, implying that the time has come to consider other forms of payment. The founder also stated that he is eager to find new opps.

"And so we continue to evaluate other forms of payments that we should take on the platform. We don't currently accept cryptocurrency on the platform."

Ebay updated its policies last year to make the e-commerce platform a place to buy and sell anything, whether it's a physical or digital commodity. With big entities jumping in - it’;s only a matter of time until cryptocurrencies hit the mainstream and I for one, can’t wait.
